| DESCRIPTION |
| 2001 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition 1.8T 5-speed manual 4-door sedan. This is a one-owner, adult-driven car. I bought it new in late April 2001. Its Cool White with the Bandchen Black sport cloth interior. It has been professionally modified and maintained, washed almost weekly, detailed yearly, and VW dealership-serviced using synthetic fluids since new. I took the OEM Plus route when modifying the car, sticking with European VW factory options and quality aftermarket accessories that kept the car looking almost stock while improving all-around performance. The 84,000 miles on the odometer have been enthusiastically but lovingly driven. It has had the 80,000 mile maintenance including replacing the timing belt. The car has never failed to start, and has always provided a huge grin whether running through the gears, carving corners, or just listening to the exhaust echo off the “canyon walls” while driving through Dallas. Original Equipment The Wolfsburg Edition Jetta has the same standard equipment as a GLS 1.8T model, including power windows with one-touch up and down feature on both front windows; power central locks with keyless entry; cruise control with resume; air conditioning; AM/FM cassette stereo with 8 speakers; dual front, front side, and rear side airbags; 4-wheel power disc brakes with ABS and ASR (slip reduction); power rack-and-pinion steering; electrically adjustable and heated outside mirrors; and many, many more standard features. It has the 1.8T engine, arguably the strongest and most “tunable” engine VW has ever produced (1788cc fuel injected 4-cylinder; 20-valve cylinder head; turbocharged and intercooled; stock performance 155 hp, 170 lbs/ft). Wolfsburg Edition Package The limited-edition Wolfsburg package added high-bolstered sport seats with a special Bandchen cloth fabric; leather wrapped three-spoke sport steering wheel, shift knob, and e-brake handle; sport suspension (special springs and shocks, and a thicker rear sway bar); a faster-ratio steering rack; and 16x6.5 BBS RXII aluminum alloy wheels with 205/55 tires. This car also came equipped from the factory with the optional electric tilt and slide smoked-glass Moonroof, and the Monsoon sound system.. Dealer-installed VW Accessories At delivery, I had the dealer install a single-disc CD player in the dash, a 6-disc CD changer in the trunk, and the VW Drivers Gear/Eibach Sport Spring package (lowers the car 1.25 from the standard sport suspension, or about 1.5 from a stock Jetta GLS). The springs are outstanding - firm for spirited driving, but comfortable enough for a commuter like me! Engine Performance Enhancements The ECU is APR-tuned with their 93-octane chip program for the 1.8T (AWW engine code), bumping engine performance to around 235 hp and 270 lbs/ft (APR advertises engine performance gains of 215 hp and 247 lbs/ft with this program, but these figures are on an otherwise stock engine without any other modifications, and this car has plenty). Helping the turbo breath more freely is a turbo-back Eurosport 2.5 full stainless-steel performance exhaust system (incl. downpipe and sport cat); Samco silicone sport hoses including intercooler and turbo inlet hoses; ECS N75 Race valve and Forge 007 diverter valve; and K and N air filter. The engine computer was recently “reflashed” with the latest updated programming from APR, the leader in VW/Audi engine tuning (programming includes 93-octane and Stock programs, plus Fault Code Erase/Throttle Body Alignment, and Security Lockout). I average 25-28 mpg in combined city/highway driving (between 335-350 miles per thankful of 93-octane Premium Unleaded). And it sounds incredible! Suspension, Wheels and Tires Handling improvements include Eibach Pro-Dampers (specially-valved front struts and rear shocks that match the VW/Eibach springs); Neuspeed 25mm front and 28mm adjustable rear swaybars, upper strut brace, and lower tie bar. Wheels are now 17x8 ASA AR1 alloys (ASA is licensed by BBS) with 235/45 Goodyear F1 GS-D3 max performance summer tires (est. 40 treadlife remaining). Other Modifications Exterior mods include European VW Jetta 4-Motion front and rear valances, Hella smoked taillights with rear foglight, and MHW clear side marker lights. Its been debadged and has a M3 rear lip spoiler. Interior mods include Audi TT pedal covers, AWE/Omori turbo boost gauge in a NewSouth pod, and a European VW headlight switch. Stainless braided steel brake lines and Mintex Red Box brake pads help scrub off speed, while the polyurethane dogbone engine/transmission bushing inserts and Neuspeed Short Shift Kit provide positive gearshift performance of the 5-speed close ratio transmission. It has a subtle but menacing look, so you won’t attract attention that you don’t want, but other sport compact enthusiasts and VW addicts will know… | |
